RPR has a particular interest in supporting the development of strong local community and community of interest. Our work in this area includes research to measure outcomes and assess needs, developing and promoting mechanisms for better co-ordination, and facilitating the development of alliances and coalitions for change. We also develop training and mentoring programs to support workers and community leaders in undertaking this often difficult work. We are committed to finding ways to work in partnership with Indigenous and ethnic communities and establish respectful consultation mechanisms to ensure their voices are heard.
RPR work which demonstrates our skills in this area includes:
- consulting with people directly affected by the January 2003 bushfires in the ACT and other interested stakeholders on whether there should be a memorial to this event and if so what form it should take. ACT Arts and Cultural Services (2003–2004)
- working with the Australian Hepatitis Council to develop an action plan aimed at increasing the effectiveness of consumer representation in the Hepatitis C movement (2004)
- developing and running a training and team building workshop for the Public Housing Customer Council to assist members of the Council to work more effectively together. The training included coaching sessions, with RPR working with the Council as it went about normal business (2004)
- An evaluation of the Intensive Tenancy Management (ITM) projects, which are located in highly disadvantaged/problematic housing estates and directed to building a stronger sense of community belonging and pride, and more trust and social responsibility amongst residents. The project included an extensive literature search on community capacity building. NSW Department of Housing (2003)
- a longitudinal study of the Reconnect program to ascertain the impact services have had on community capacity to undertake early intervention into youth homelessness related to family relationship problems. Commonwealth Department of Family and Community Services (2001–2003)
- providing support to 'Youth Matters', a whole of community approach to prevent illicit drug use among young people in the Redfern/Waterloo area of inner city Sydney. It brings together a broad spectrum of service providers to work in partnership with parents, young people and concerned community members to develop and implement a range of innovative strategies to build young people's resilience. RPR provided assistance in seeking establishment funding, developing evaluation strategies, advising on design of a leadership training program, mentoring the project co-ordinator. South Sydney Youth Services (2001–2003)
